Exercising Your Body Makes You Smarter

Do you feel smarter after you workout?  It's because you have more oxygen available to your brain.  Working out also increases your sense of well-being.  In Shed 10 Years in 10 Weeks, Dr. Julian Whitaker and Colman write about how exercising makes you smarter and feel better.

Think Better and Feel Better
Dr. Whitaker and Colman write the following:

Did you ever wonder why you feel so recharged after a good workout?  Nowhere is the body mind connection more apparent than when it comes to the effect of exercise on the brain.  Exercise increases the amount of oxygen available to the brain by making the heart stronger and able to pump more oxygenated blood.  In addition to increasing oxygen stores, exercise creates a natural high.  It stimulates the release of endorphins, neurochemicals that actually have an opiatelike effect on the brain.  People who exercise think more clearly, feel more alert and energetic, and have a markedly increased sense of well-being.

Key Take Aways
Here's my key take aways:

  • Exercising makes you think and feel better and act better.
  • You feel smarter after you workout because you have more oxygen available to your brain.
  • Endorphins released during exercise make you feel better.

J.D., your site is a must read for anyone too busy to read! (That's me these days!) Great reviews, great summaries, great takeaways. Thanks, I was curious about Dr. Whittaker's program. It's good to see all these things I learned in Naturopathic med school back in the 70s and 80s have gone mainstream.
I hope you come back and provide updates until you've completed the whole program!
be well
Rick

Hey Dr. K

Thanks for the kind words!

I really hope to connect more people to the great wisdom of the ages. So many nuggets from so many books have really shaped my life. It's like standing on the shoulders of giants.

Your Dealing with People You Can't Stand, is among the timeless classics. I recommend it to all my mentees.

Maybe not, but it looks like it can help your brain work more efficiently. Researchers looked at the brain waves of two groups of elderly people, one athletic, the other sedentary. They found that the brain waves of the athletic group more closely resembled those of younger people. This study strongly suggests that exercise can help you maintain your mental sharpness as you age. So who do you know who wants to maintain their mental edge as they age? My unique coaching system will provide you with an exercise program to help you achieve a fit body as well as a fit mind.

Although I won't argue about the health benefits of excercise, Dr. Whitaker is not a credible source of medical information. I would question any of his claims.

He is listed on QuackWatch (http://www.quackwatch.com/) as a 'Nonrecommended source of health advice'. Quackwatch is a well known medical scam/debunking site.

In addition, Whitaker wrote a book on 'magnet therapy' - well documented quackery again.

He's a well published author. That doesn't mean he's right - just popular.

I recommend reading "Trick or Treatment: The Undeniable Facts about Alternative Medicine", by Professor Ernst and Dr. Simon Singh, it convincingly explains the pitfalls of alternative medicine and present the body of evidence for and such against treatments, magnet therapy included.

Despite the negative comment. Keep posting J.D. - I really like the blog.

I forgot, you can find the book
here.

I'm not associated with the authors, in any way. Just a skeptic with a passionate dislike of scams and rip-off merchants.
